AI’s function in cybersecurity is not just beneficial, but essential. Machine Learning (ML) algorithms can analyze and interpolate (insert) large amounts of data – much faster than any human – to uncover new patterns that would otherwise go unseen.
As companies are becoming increasingly focused on the social impact of their business operations, Deloitte has developed a new Social Impact Measurement Model (SIMM), pioneering a machine learning tool that forecasts the results of a large corporate investment – such as opening a new office or headquarters – on a community, across more than 75 social measures.
When General Motors wanted to reduce energy consumption across its portfolio, it tapped into Current, powered by GE, to outfit its facilities with new LED fixtures that will cut lighting-related energy use by more than 60 percent. After starting installations in 2017, the automaker is well on its way with more than 50,000 LED fixtures installed. At the same time, GM is incorporating sensors and controls into the new light fixtures to create a future-proof digital ceiling that can provide even greater savings and become part of a more robust intelligent infrastructure.
The term “natural disaster” is a misnomer. Natural ecosystems often require disturbances such as fires and floods to remain healthy. They have an inherent resilience to the occasional battering. Crises created by destructive natural events might be more aptly referred to as “social disasters,” because of the toll of life and economic damage left in their wake. Framing such events as social disasters places them in a different light, shifting the burden on all sectors of society to proactively manage the threat.
The integration of new technology tools are the next step in the EHS&S technology adoption curve, which for most companies began with the implementation of their software system. Today these innovations are shedding new light on EHS&S operational risks in real time.
This week at the 2019 HIMSS Conference & Exhibition, VMware (NYSE: VMW) highlighted several customers who are partnering with the company to transform the cost, quality, and delivery of patient care – from the data center to the point of care.
Climate change is indisputable, as well as its impact on our planet’s invaluable but finite resources. Indeed, this is one of the most pressing paradoxes of our time: How do we strive for industrial growth while also being mindful of the traditional environmental impact of productivity?
We must find the right balance. Everyone feels this urgency. The world is on a fast track to consume four Earths’ worth of resources by 2050. A recent United Nations report also warned that CO2 emissions must be cut nearly in half by 2030 to safeguard the planet from additional threats of climate change. Take note: that is just 10 brief years.
The first time I spoke at a conference about air pollution, the venue was right beside a daycare—a well-regarded chain, no doubt with significant waiting lists. But on the outside, the facility was steps from onramps to a bridge and a major highway, where horns blared and buses and trucks idled at the lights.
Lena Low learned the importance of doing the right thing early in her career when she worked with an emergency medical assistance company that flew teams out to help victims of the 2002 Bali bombing and the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004.
As news of the disasters broke, she watched in admiration as her colleagues headed to the airport with no thought of the cost of the operation but only one objective in mind: to save lives.
“I worked with company founders, doctors and nurses who have very high professional standards and believe doing the right thing matters more than revenue or profit because people’s lives are at stake,” she recalls.
It is a lesson Singapore native Lena has carried with her into her current role as Senior Director for Customer and Business Development at CLP Power.
