Sustainable Farming: The Best Is yet to Come

Farming, like all investments, carries some degree of risk. How SFP mitigates these risks is unique and key to the opportunity. Market demand for organic food is the fastest growing section in the grocery store isles. Geographically, SFP’s established farm operating network is spread out to minimize the impact of local weather events. Our distributed farm network is focused on areas with the best available soil. Linking our farming network provides the opportunity to negotiate better offtake agreements and to negotiate greater discounts on inputs. And in the event of any crop damage due to a weather event that diminishes our yields, we have crop insurance covering up to 85 percent of our crop loss paid at our higher organic prices.

Following our January 2018 announcement to remove eel from our sushi products, we immediately started working with our sushi vendors to discontinue the use of eel in sushi sold at our stores. In addition, our employees are working hard to audit each of our stores to make sure we phase out eel as quickly as possible.

How Governments Can Monitor Progress Towards Better Nutrition

Goal 2 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development calls on governments to "End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture". Each of the 193 countries that adopted the Agenda are faced with their own set of uncertain factors that influence their progress, making it difficult to obtain information to support policy, planning and implementation of practices that will result in better nutrition.

Dispatches from the Sustainable Brands Conference - Vancouver 2018, Days 2-3

“Society is now expecting more from businesses,” said Sara Soderstrom, assistant professor of Organizational Studies and Program in the Environment at the University of Michigan, in the session “Company-Community Partnerships for Purpose and Sustainable Impact.” She explained that tensions exist between aspirations and objectives, and she used President John F. Kennedy’s approach to putting a man on the moon as an example: The aspiration was to advance science, and putting a man on the moon was an objective that served to advance science.
