CBRE Environmental Sustainability

In response to ongoing global discussion about climate change and its impact on the natural environment, CBRE has committed to minimizing that impact for our company, clients and communities.

Buildings are widely viewed as a significant contributor to carbon emissions, and as the world’s largest manager of commercial buildings CBRE has both a responsibility and an opportunity to influence the way buildings are built, sourced, managed, occupied and sold.

This ability to drive sustainable real estate practices is a fundamental principal of our environmental leadership.

CBRE Study Finds San Francisco The Nation’s Greenest City
Institutional owners of office buildings continued to pursue green building certifications in the 30 largest U.S. markets during 2015. Continuing an upward trend over the past decade, green certifications are now held by 11.8 percent of all surveyed buildings, representing 40.2 percent of all office space. Both figures are slightly above last year’s results, according to the third annual Green Building Adoption Index study by CBRE Group, Inc. and Maastricht University. “Green” office buildings in the U.S. are defined as those that hold either an EPA ENERGY STAR label, USGBC LEED certification or both.

A Beginners Guide to the UK Capacity Market
Set out in the UK Energy Act 2013, the Capacity Market (CM) is one of the UK government initatives for ensuring security of electrical energy supply for homes, businesses and industry. The CM not only secures additional electricity supply for use during grid stress events – which is increasingly important as energy demand increases, and the UK moves to more intermittent, less flexible renewable generation – but also creates an opportunity for those with generation capacity to earn additional income.

The Business Case for Resilient Buildings
The Miami-Dade County building code requires commercial buildings to enclose their first 30 feet in impact-resistant glass so as to withstand damage from high winds and flying objects during a hurricane. The developers of Miami’s 1450 Brickell office tower decided to go one better, enclosing the entire 35-story building in impact-resistant glass. According to a 2015 report from the Urban Land Institute, when the tower was finished in 2010, it had “the strongest curtain wall window system of any commercial building in the nation.”

New Protocol Brings a Breath of Fresh Air for Managing Natural Capital
The Earth’s natural resources, whether it’s the air, water, soils, geology or ecosystems around us, sustain all life on earth. These resources, sometimes termed ‘natural capital’, provide us with a vast range of services, from the more obvious examples, such as the food we eat and the materials we use to build our towns and cities, to those less visible, such as climate regulation and the pollination of plants by insects.
